Community safety

Harassment, missing persons, and public-nuisance incidents need a record even when they feel minor.

Applies across India. Civic numbers may differ by city. Last reviewed 18 August 2026.

If it just happened

  • For harassment, move to a well-lit public place and call 1091 (women's helpline) or 112.
  • For a missing person, report immediately — the old '24-hour rule' does not legally exist.
  • Record audio/video only if safe; never escalate physically.

Reduce the risk

  • Save one emergency contact under 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) so responders can find it from a locked phone.
  • Share live location with a trusted contact for first-time meetings or late commutes.

Report and follow up

  • Missing-person reports: carry a recent photo, last-seen details, phone number. Filing station must accept (zero-FIR).
  • Harassment at work: Internal Complaints Committee under the PoSH Act 2013.
  • Child-related incidents: Childline 1098, 24×7.
